Sober October: A Gentle Reset for Mind and Body

As the seasons change and the pace of the year begins to slow, October offers a natural moment to pause and reflect. For many, it’s also become the month of Sober October — a chance to step away from alcohol, even briefly, and check in on your wellbeing.

Originally launched as a fundraising initiative, Sober October has grown into a broader movement of self-care. It’s less about restriction and more about curiosity: What might life feel like if I put alcohol to one side for a few weeks?

Why Sober October Matters

From a counselling perspective, breaks like this can be surprisingly powerful. Alcohol is woven into much of modern social life — after-work drinks, weekend gatherings, special occasions. Taking a pause helps you:

  • Notice patterns: When and why you drink, and how it affects your mood.

  • Experience your natural state: Better sleep, clearer thinking, steadier emotions.

  • Practice new coping strategies: Socialising or relaxing without relying on alcohol.

Many people find that just one month off helps them feel more in control and gives insight into their relationship with drinking.

Tips for a Compassionate Sober October

  • Set an intention, not a rule. Approach it as an experiment rather than a test of willpower.

  • Plan alcohol-free alternatives. Sparkling waters, low-sugar soft drinks, alcohol-free beers and spirits have improved dramatically in recent years.

  • Involve others. Ask a friend, partner or colleague to join you. Support makes the process lighter and more enjoyable.

  • Reflect regularly. Keep a simple journal of how you feel each day. Notice your sleep, energy, mood and any triggers for drinking.

If You’re Struggling

For some people, taking a break from alcohol may bring up uncomfortable emotions or highlight a deeper dependence. If you notice distress, cravings or difficulty coping, it’s important to reach out for support rather than push through alone. Talking with a counsellor or a healthcare professional can help you explore underlying feelings or habits safely.

Looking Beyond October

Sober October isn’t about giving up alcohol forever. It’s about choice, self-awareness and self-care. Whether you return to drinking afterwards or decide to drink less, the insights you gain can help you build healthier, more intentional habits.

If you’d like to talk things through, sometimes it helps to have a confidential space where you can reflect without judgement. If you’re curious about your relationship with alcohol, or simply want support with your wellbeing, we’re here to listen. You’re welcome to reach out for a confidential chat and explore what feels right for you.
