About Sea Change Therapies

The acorn of an idea for Sea Change Therapies was planted in the recognition that accessing therapy shouldn't require impossible financial choices. Too many people look for support but struggle to afford it. Over time, that idea grew — and eventually, that growing oak became something: a vessel for change, a way to help people navigate their own journeys without the barrier of cost standing in their way.

Now Sea Change has grown to encompass more than that initial vision. What started as an idea has become our community—a collective of counsellors working together to create real change, offer genuine support, and build something meaningful in our local community. It's also about supporting the next generation of therapists, giving them a place to develop their practice ethically and professionally under proper supervision. A way of paying forward the guidance and opportunities we've all received in our own training.

Sea Change Therapies is now a not-for-profit service where quality therapy is genuinely affordable and accessible, where no one has to choose between their mental wellbeing and paying their bills, and where new therapists can grow into the ethical practitioners they want to be — all while being part of something bigger than themselves.

Our Philosophy: People, Not Profit
We operate on a simple principle: people matter more than profit.

This isn't just a tagline. It's the foundation of every decision we make:
Sliding-scale fees mean you choose what you can genuinely afford within our range. No proof required. No justification needed. We trust you to know your own financial situation.

The trainee therapist model keeps our costs down while maintaining professional standards. Our therapists are experienced trainees in their final years of training, working under close supervision. They bring current knowledge, dedication, and rigorous oversight to the work. This structure is what makes affordable therapy possible.

Saying yes when we can. If cost is a barrier and you need support, we'll have that conversation. We'd rather work something out than have you go without help.

Reinvesting, not extracting. As a not-for-profit organisation, any income goes straight back into sustaining and growing the service—not into anyone's pocket.

Supporting the next generation. We're committed to creating a professional environment where trainee therapists can develop their practice ethically, with proper supervision and support. Therapy thrives when therapists themselves are well-supported.

This approach means we can't help everyone. Our capacity is limited, and sometimes people need specialist or more intensive support than we can offer. When that's the case, we'll be honest with you and help you find the right support elsewhere.

How We Work
Sea Change Therapies is built on a training and supervision model.

Our therapists are experienced trainees in their second or third year of an MSc in Counselling. They're engaged in both intensive academic learning and deep personal development work—the kind that builds empathy, self-awareness, and the capacity to truly hold space for another person.

Sea Change operates under the BACP Ethical Framework, ensuring that every client receives safe, high-quality care.

Supervision isn't optional — it's central to how we work, and is an ethical requirement.

Every therapist at Sea Change receives regular clinical supervision with their individual supervisor, as well as group supervision within Sea Change. This means they bring their work to these supportive spaces to reflect on what's happening in sessions, explore challenges, celebrate growth, and ensure the care clients receive is thoughtful, ethical, and effective.

Supervision protects both clients and therapists. It means therapists aren't working in isolation. They have support, guidance, and accountability. They're continuously developing their skills and deepening their understanding of the work.

This model allows us to offer professional therapy at significantly lower costs than traditional private practice, while maintaining the quality and safety clients deserve. It also creates a learning environment where new therapists can develop their practice in a supportive, ethically grounded way.

Clients benefit from therapists who are current, committed, and closely supported. We benefit from building a community of skilled practitioners who share our values.

Our Approach
We practice pluralistic, trauma-informed, relational therapy.

These aren't just buzzwords — they describe how we understand therapy and how we work with clients.

Pluralistic means we believe there's no single "right" way to heal or grow. Different people need different things at different times. Rather than fitting you into one therapeutic approach, we work collaboratively with you to find what helps. You're the expert in your own life, and therapy becomes a genuine partnership where we explore together what approaches might best support your goals and values.

Trauma-informed means we understand how past experiences shape present difficulties. We don't assume everyone has experienced trauma, but we recognise that many people have — and that trauma affects how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world. We work sensitively, at your pace, helping you build a sense of safety, choice, and agency throughout the process. We never push you to talk about things before you're ready.

Relational means we believe the therapeutic relationship itself is where healing happens. It's not just about techniques or strategies — it's about being genuinely seen, heard, and valued exactly as you are. The quality of the connection between you and your therapist matters enormously. Trust, safety, and authentic engagement are what make therapy transformative.

Together, these principles create therapy that's flexible, respectful, collaborative, and deeply human.

Our Community
We're rooted in the East Neuk of Fife, serving our local community and offering online support further afield.

Being local matters to us. We understand the context people are living in — the rhythms of life here, the challenges and strengths of village or rural life, the connections and complexities of community. Your therapist knows what it means when you mention the harbour, the high street, or the particular isolation that can come with beautiful coastal living.

But Sea Change is also about building community among therapists and mental health practitioners. We offer group supervision, peer support groups for experienced counsellors and qualified supervisors, and we're developing workshops on working with difference in therapeutic relationships.

This isn't just a therapy service — it's a growing collective of people committed to doing this work well, supporting each other, and creating meaningful change in how mental health support is accessed and delivered in our area.

Whether you're seeking therapy or you're a therapist looking for connection and professional development, there's space for you here.

About Morven Cuthbertson
Clinical Lead & Founder

I came to counselling through my own life's challenges.
Therapy changed everything for me. It gave me a space to be seen, to understand myself, to process what had happened in my life, and what was still happening. Eventually, it led me to train as a counsellor myself.

I qualified with a Postgraduate Diploma in Pluralistic Counselling from Abertay University. I've since achieved BACP Senior Accreditation as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist — a level of professional recognition that reflects over a decade of rigorous ethical practice, ongoing professional and personal development, and demonstrated excellence in the field. I'm also a qualified clinical supervisor and a qualified EMDR practitioner.

But more than credentials, I understand what it's like to sit in that therapy chair as a client — uncertain, vulnerable, hoping someone will truly "get me". That experience shapes everything about how I work and how I've built Sea Change Therapies.

My practice has evolved to focus on neurodiversity, trauma and LGBTQ+ identities. I understand these experiences not just professionally, but personally—through my own neurodivergence and the experiences of those I love. I know what it means to navigate systems that weren't designed for difference.

I know therapy works best when it feels genuinely safe, when you're met with compassion rather than judgement, and when the relationship itself becomes a space for healing. That's what we're building here.
